rans0m.net

public xmpp server // for hackers

$ cat faq.txt

Who is this for?

Hackers, security researchers, activists, privacy nerds, CTF players, and anyone who understands why self-hosted, encrypted infrastructure matters. If you need to ask whether you belong here, you probably do.

Is this server monitored?

No message content is logged. Connection metadata (IP, timestamp) may be kept briefly for technical reasons and is not shared with anyone. Use Tor if you want to hide your IP. OMEMO encrypts your messages end-to-end — even if someone had the server logs, they'd get ciphertext.

Do I need to register with an email or real name?

No. Pick a username, set a password, done. No email, no phone number, no KYC. Registration is open via in-band registration (IBR) directly from your XMPP client.

What services are running?

Beyond XMPP, rans0m.net runs a small suite of tools for the community:

  • XMPP Encrypted messaging via Jabber/XMPP + OMEMO.
  • Mumble Low-latency voice chat. No accounts, no browser needed.
  • Privatebin Zero-knowledge encrypted pastebin. Key never leaves your browser.
  • Gitea Self-hosted Git. Host your tools, scripts, and projects.
  • CryptPad End-to-end encrypted collaborative documents and spreadsheets.
  • Vaultwarden Self-hosted Bitwarden-compatible password manager. Your vault, your server.

Can I use this over Tor?

Yes. Onion services are available for all infrastructure:

Using Tor hides your IP from the server entirely — recommended if that matters to you.

What encryption should I use?

OMEMO — always. It uses the Double Ratchet algorithm (same as Signal), supports multiple devices, works with offline messages, and is supported by all recommended clients. OTR is available for legacy reasons but should be avoided — see why OTR is not great.

What is allowed?

Everything. This server exists for people who don't need a list of permitted activities. The only hard line is CSAM — that gets you banned immediately, no discussion. Everything else is on you. You are an adult. Act accordingly.

Is this server reliable?

Best-effort. This is not a commercial service. Downtime happens. If the server is critical to your ops, run your own alongside this one.

How do I report abuse or reach the admin?

XMPP: admin@rans0m.net
